WHAT SIZE GENERATOR FOR A 4,000+ SQ FT HOUSE?

Big homes are where generator sizing gets interesting — and where the cost difference between getting it right and guessing wrong gets large. At 4,000+ square feet you are choosing between the top of the air-cooled range and the bottom of the liquid-cooled range, and the right answer depends on your loads, not your pride.

The honest starting point

A 4,000-5,000 sq ft home almost always lands at 24-26kW air-cooled minimum for whole-home coverage. The deciding question is your HVAC: large homes usually run two AC condensers, and whether both need to start (and run) simultaneously under generator power is the fork in the road.

  • Two condensers + load management: a 26kW air-cooled unit staggers the AC starts and sheds low-priority loads momentarily. This covers a surprising number of large homes at air-cooled prices.
  • Heavy simultaneous loads — dual 4-5 ton systems, electric heat, pool, well, EV charging, home gym/theater: this is liquid-cooled territory, 30-38kW+.

Why liquid-cooled earns its price up here

Air-cooled engines at 26kW are working near the top of their design. Liquid-cooled units (Generac Protector class and up) run bigger displacement engines at lower stress, deliver cleaner sustained power for long multi-day outages, run quieter per kW, and last roughly twice as long. For estates and all-electric large homes they are not a luxury — they are the correct tool.

The loads that decide it

Walk your home with this list — each yes pushes you up:

  • Two or more AC condensers (sizes?)
  • Electric resistance heat or large heat pumps
  • Well pump, especially deep-well
  • Pool/spa equipment
  • EV charger needed during outages
  • Detached shop, guest house, or barn on the same service

The money math

A 26kW air-cooled unit costs meaningfully less than a 32-38kW liquid-cooled — but an undersized unit that trips during the first August outage is the most expensive mistake available. Use 0% APR financing to buy the right size, not the hopeful size. Current pricing for both tiers is live on the standby generators catalog.

Frequently asked questions

What size generator do I need for a 5,000 sq ft house?
Typically 26kW air-cooled with load management at minimum, and 32-38kW liquid-cooled when there are dual large AC systems, electric heat, pool equipment, or EV charging. The honest answer comes from a load calculation, not the square footage alone.
When should I choose liquid-cooled over air-cooled?
When your simultaneous loads exceed what a 26kW air-cooled unit can carry, when outages in your area run multi-day and the generator will work hard for long stretches, or when you simply want the longest-lived, quietest-per-kW platform. Roughly: most homes under 4,000 sq ft are air-cooled; estates and all-electric large homes go liquid-cooled.
Can load management replace buying a bigger generator?
Often, yes. Smart modules briefly shed low-priority circuits when big loads start, then restore them — letting a 26kW unit cover homes that would otherwise need 32kW+. It costs far less than the next size class. The limit: it manages surges, not sustained overload — if your continuous load exceeds the unit, you need the bigger machine.
