The short version
Both brands build excellent home standby generators. Generac has the largest installed base in North America and the broadest dealer network. Kohler brings a century of engine-building heritage, an all-aluminum corrosion-proof enclosure on every home unit, and one feature no other major brand offers — 11 designer colors and Mossy Oak camo on the 14/20/26 kW RCA.
Lineup
Generac
Guardian Series air-cooled (roughly 10–26 kW), Protector Series liquid-cooled (25 kW and up), with Mobile Link Wi-Fi monitoring on most modern units. See our Generac lineup.
Kohler
RCA air-cooled (10–26 kW), RCL liquid-cooled (24–60 kW) plus commercial models up to 150 kW, RDC2 controller, and OnCue Plus Wi-Fi/cellular monitoring. See our Kohler lineup.
Engines
Both brands offer proven air-cooled and liquid-cooled platforms. Generac uses its G-Force OHVI engines in the air-cooled range; Kohler uses Command PRO air-cooled engines and a 2.2L+ liquid-cooled engine in the RCL series.
The color & camo difference
This is Kohler's exclusive: the 14, 20, and 26 kW RCA ship in 11 designer colors and Mossy Oak Shadow Grass or Break-Up Country camo from the factory. Generac ships in standard Bisque. If curb appeal, matching your siding/trim, or hiding the unit in a wooded yard matters to you, Kohler is the only option among the major brands.
Monitoring
Both brands offer Wi-Fi monitoring through a phone app with status, run history, and alerts. Functionally similar — pick whichever ecosystem you prefer, or whichever your installer supports.
Warranty
Both publish a 5-year limited warranty on home standby units. Coverage specifics vary by model and registration timing — check the current warranty card on the exact model you're considering. Buying from a factory-authorized dealer ensures the warranty is valid and properly serviced.
Service & parts
Both maintain nationwide authorized service networks. In NC and SC we service both directly. Outside our area, local tech density can favor one brand or the other — ask us and we'll help you check what's near you.
