What generator brands are compatible?

Total PowerWatch is compatible with many Generac, Cummins and Kohler standby generators, as well as select other brands. The exact readings and alarms available depend on the generator model, controller, wiring and package. We verify compatibility for your specific unit before installation.

Question 3

Does PowerWatch use my home Wi-Fi?

Accepted Answer

No. Total PowerWatch uses its own cellular connection, so it does not depend on your home Wi-Fi router. That means the system keeps working even if your internet is down during an outage, as long as there is cellular coverage at the generator location.

Question 4

What conditions can PowerWatch detect?

Accepted Answer

PowerWatch can detect generator run and stop status, weekly, biweekly or monthly exercise cycles, missed or failed exercises, battery-voltage changes, low-battery conditions, extended runtimes, engine hours and a range of compatible common-fault and controller signals. Available readings and alarms vary by generator model, controller and install package.

Will it show the exact manufacturer fault code?

PowerWatch reports compatible common-fault and status signals from the controller. Not every residential generator controller exposes the exact manufacturer fault code number to a third-party monitor. When a condition is detected, our service team can follow up and, where needed, retrieve the specific OEM code on-site.

Does PowerWatch guarantee my generator will start?

Accepted Answer

No. No monitoring service can guarantee that a generator will start or that it will run for the full duration of an outage. PowerWatch is designed to give you visibility into the health and activity of the generator between service visits so a hidden problem is less likely to surprise you when backup power is needed most.

Does monitoring replace annual generator maintenance?

Accepted Answer

No. Total PowerWatch supplements — it does not replace — professional annual maintenance. Oil, filters, spark plugs, batteries, coolant on liquid-cooled units and full on-site inspection still need to happen on the manufacturer's recommended schedule to keep the generator reliable and the factory warranty intact.

Will Total Generator Pros receive my alerts?

Accepted Answer

Yes. PowerWatch is designed so that actionable conditions can be sent to both you and the Total Generator Pros service team. This does not mean every alert is human-reviewed the instant it arrives, but it does mean your generator's status is visible to a local service team that can follow up.

Question 9

Are repairs included in the annual monitoring price?

Accepted Answer

No. Repairs, service calls, parts and labor are not automatically included in the annual PowerWatch monitoring fee. If an alert indicates a problem that requires on-site work, we will provide a service quote separately. PowerWatch customers are always welcome to bundle monitoring with a maintenance plan.

Question 10

Can PowerWatch be installed during my next service visit?

In many cases, yes. If your generator is compatible and your service window allows the additional wiring and configuration, we can add PowerWatch during a scheduled maintenance visit. Submit the compatibility form and our team will confirm what makes sense for your unit.

Question 11

What happens if cellular service is weak at my property?

Accepted Answer

Cellular coverage at the generator location is required. If signal is marginal, we may recommend a high-gain antenna, relocating the cellular module or, in some cases, a different monitoring configuration. We evaluate signal as part of installation and will let you know before you commit.

Question 12

Can you monitor propane or diesel fuel levels?

Accepted Answer

Fuel-level monitoring for propane and diesel tanks is not part of the standard PowerWatch package and typically requires separate compatible tank sensors and, in some cases, additional service fees. If fuel visibility is important to you, mention it on the compatibility form and we will scope options.

Can PowerWatch monitor a commercial generator?

Commercial and larger liquid-cooled generators — including units that use Modbus or advanced controller integrations — are evaluated individually. Depending on the controller, we may recommend a different monitoring configuration or a custom install. Contact our team so we can review the specific unit.

What happens after the first year?

Accepted Answer

The first year of monitoring is included with the installed price. After the first year, annual monitoring continues at $249 per year for Total PowerWatch or $299 per year for Total PowerWatch Complete. We will contact you before renewal.

Can I cancel the monitoring service?

Accepted Answer

PowerWatch is not a long-term locked contract in the traditional sense, but cancellation, refund and prorating terms can change. Contact our team for the current terms before you enroll or if you need to make a change to your account.
