- What's the difference between a portable and a standby generator?
- Portable generators are movable, fueled manually (gasoline, propane, or dual-fuel), and you plug appliances or transfer-switch inlets into them. Standby units are permanently installed, hardwired through a transfer switch, and start automatically. Portables are great for jobsites, RVs, tailgating, and emergency backup of essential circuits.
- How big a portable generator do I need?
- Add up the running watts of what you need to power (fridge, lights, microwave, sump pump, etc.) plus the surge wattage of any motors. Inverter portables typically run 2,000–5,000W; conventional and dual-fuel portables run 5,000–13,000W. Use our sizing calculator if you're unsure.
- Do portable generators ship free?
- Yes. Eligible portable generators ship free to the contiguous 48 states via standard freight or parcel carriers.
- Can I use a portable generator for whole-home backup?
- With a manual transfer switch and an inlet box, a 7,500–12,000W portable can power essential circuits during an outage. For automatic, hands-off whole-home backup, a standby generator is the right tool — see our standby category page.
