GENERAC 22KW GENERATOR COST: WHAT YOU'LL REALLY PAY

The Generac 22 kW Guardian is the most-installed home standby generator in America. This guide breaks down what it actually costs — unit versus install, bundled versus unbundled, fuel choice, and how to use 0% APR financing — from a factory-authorized Generac dealer.

Why 22 kW is America's most-installed size

The 22 kW Guardian sits at the top of Generac's air-cooled residential line. It covers whole-home backup for the typical American house — central AC, well, kitchen, electronics, lighting — without jumping to a liquid-cooled platform that costs significantly more to buy and install. For most 2,000–3,500 sq ft homes with a single HVAC zone, 22 kW is the right answer. It's also the volume seller, which means more installers know it, parts are everywhere, and resale on a serviced 22 kW Guardian is healthy.

Unit cost vs install cost

Total installed cost has two halves. We can talk about the unit half precisely (live price on the product page); the install half is site-specific.

Unit price

The Generac 22 kW Guardian is priced in the mid four figures for the unit alone. Current per-model pricing — including any active promotions — is on the product page: 22 kW Guardian (Model 7042).

Install price

Installation depends on:

  • Gas line — distance from meter to pad, pipe size, and whether the meter needs to be upsized for the 22 kW's BTU demand.
  • Electrical — conduit run to the panel, ATS, and any sub-panel work.
  • Concrete pad — Generac's pre-cast pad is fine for most installs; rocky or sloped sites add cost.
  • Permits and inspection — required in most jurisdictions.
  • Distance from panel and meter — longer trenching, more wire, more pipe.

For a straightforward 22 kW install on a typical home, the install line item commonly lands in the low four figures. Difficult sites, long gas runs, or panel upgrades push it higher. A site-specific quote is the only way to know your number.

Bundle (Model 7043) vs unit only (Model 7042)

Generac sells the 22 kW two ways:

  • Model 7042 — unit only. The generator by itself. Right pick if you already have a working transfer switch, want a different brand or amperage of ATS, or are pairing with a non-standard panel setup.
  • Model 7043 — with 200A SE transfer switch. The generator plus a matched Generac 200-amp service-entrance ATS. The bundle is usually meaningfully cheaper than buying the two SKUs separately and is what most whole-home installs use.

Fuel choice: natural gas or propane

The 22 kW Guardian is dual-fuel out of the box and field-selectable at install:

  • Natural gas (NG): rated 19.5 kW. Best if you have a city gas line — no tank, unlimited runtime, lower cost per hour. This is what most installs use.
  • Liquid propane (LP): rated 22 kW (the full nameplate). Best if you're rural or off the gas grid; you'll need an appropriately sized tank.

If you're undecided, the installer can leave the propane orifice in and switch later — you're not locked in at order time.

0% APR financing

0% APR financing is available on qualifying Generac 22 kW orders. This is how most homeowners step up to the 22 kW (or to the 7043 bundle) without changing their monthly budget. Spread the cost over fixed monthly payments with no interest. See current terms on the financing page.

FAQ

Why is the Generac 22 kW so popular?
It's the largest air-cooled Guardian on a single-engine, residential-friendly footprint. 22 kW covers whole-home backup for most American houses (2,000–3,500 sq ft, central AC, well, kitchen, electronics) without stepping up to a much more expensive liquid-cooled platform. It hits the sweet spot of capability, price, install cost, and dealer/parts availability — which is why it's consistently the volume seller.
What's the difference between Generac 7042 and 7043?
Model 7042 is the 22 kW unit by itself. Model 7043 is the same generator bundled with a Generac 200-amp service-entrance automatic transfer switch (ATS). The bundle is usually meaningfully cheaper than buying the two SKUs separately and is the right pick for most whole-home installs. If you already have a transfer switch or need a non-standard ATS, the 7042 unit-only SKU is the right call.
How much does Generac 22 kW installation cost?
Installation depends on your site, not the unit: gas line length and meter capacity, electrical run to the panel and ATS, the concrete pad, permits and inspection, and whether load management is needed. Two identical 22 kW Guardians on two different homes can have meaningfully different install totals. In NC and SC we provide a free site-specific installed quote; outside that area we ship the unit free to your door at factory pricing and you use a local licensed installer.
Natural gas or propane for the 22 kW?
Natural gas is the most common choice if you have a city gas line — no tank, unlimited runtime. Propane is the go-to if you're rural or off the gas grid. The 22 kW Guardian is field-selectable between the two fuels, so you're not locked in at order time. Note: it's rated 22 kW on LP and 19.5 kW on natural gas — the NG rating is what most installs use.
Is 0% APR financing available on the Generac 22 kW?
Yes — 0% APR financing is available on qualifying Generac 22 kW orders. This is how a lot of homeowners step up to the 22 kW (or to the bundled 7043) without changing their monthly budget. See the financing page for current terms and how to apply.
